9th April 2000

During the morning of the 9th, it was obvious conditions were good for some thunderstorms. Cumulus were already congesting on the Adelaide Hills and in the Mid North. Tropical moisture was feeding down from the north-east - associated with a middle layer trough. By early afternoon this caused thunderstorms to develop on and west of the Flinders and Mount Lofty Ranges, moving into the north-eastern suburbs of Adelaide. Viewers in the Adelaide parklands and on TV watching the Clipsal 500 car race had good footage of the storms developing and then dropping their load on the track!
Heavy showers caused flash flooding in the Lower North, Mount Lofty Ranges and the Adelaide Plains. Houses were flooded and roads closed in the Lower North townships of Gladstone, Crystal Brook and Port Pirie. Gulnare, also in the Lower North, received 63mm of rain in 24 hours, breaking the daily rainfall record set in 1905. Lightning struck two trees in the eastern suburbs of Adelaide causing minor scrub fires. In metro Adelaide Parafield AP recorded 25mm in 2h to 5pm.

(If anyone has radar images for the 9th, please let me know.
They would be greatly appreciated.)
