Prime-time ratings compiled by Nielsen Media Research for the week of
Sept. 23-29 places The Practice on the 22nd place.
ABC's "The Practice" opened its seventh season Sunday with a meaty
episode that picked up where last season's cliffhanger finale left off
— Lindsay is facing a lifetime in prison after the first appeal of her
murder conviction is denied — but it also brought the David E. Kelley
legal drama back to its roots in setting up a secondary story line
examining a classic collision between legal ethics and morality

HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - David E. Kelley is giving viewers another incentive
to watch his shows all the way to the end.
For about five years, the producer behind "The Practice," "Boston Public
(news - Y! TV)" and the upcoming "Girls Club" has used a brief video of
his late grandmother as the centerpiece of the David E. Kelley Prods.
closing credits card. Grandma is heard shouting "You stinka!" as she's
literally blown off her rocker.
Now, Grandma's striking back.
Kelley decided over the summer that it might be a neat idea to tweak his
credits card by using digital technology to put grandma in some new
situations. He contacted Bob Arvin and Jake Aguas at animation shop 3dBob
Prods. and asked them to digitize granny -- and then have some fun with
her.
The result: Two new credit sequences in which grandma faces off against a
hockey stick-wielding boy Kelley admits "could have been me" as a kid.
In one scene, the boy charges at grandma, shouting "Score, score, score";
in another, she hits back with "a vicious cross-check," Kelley said.
The hockey theme is particularly appropriate since, according to Kelley,
his grandmother "was an avid sports fan." His own passion for hockey is
also well-known (see his 1999 feature "Mystery, Alaska").
The two new sequences, along with the "classic" rocking chair close, will
now rotate on a random basis among Kelley's trio of shows. Kelley said he
may add a fourth scene at a later date.
"The technology is so advanced now that you make changes without too much
hardship," Kelley told Daily Variety. "And since my grandmother now exists
in 3D form, we'll be able to change it again."
Kelley said he and his grandmother had "a great relationship" often based
on playing jokes on one another or her "reprimanding affection."
"We took turns getting the last laugh, and she usually won," he said. "Now
that she's passed away, I finally have half a chance."
