the naughty see monkey - Art Gallery.Naughty is an unusual and remarkable artist who is not preoccupied with pretentious stereotypical imagery. He is a whimsical master of all things intriguing, provocative, bizarre, sobering and confrontational, all of which will challenge, taunt, seduce, amuse, tantalise and even offend the intellect. Naughty's selection of materials and techniques are wanton escapades and masteries of intent. He possesses an uncanny perspective for visual ingredients that often combine to form compositions that are by no means straightforward, yet strikingly simplistic in nature. Steel traps, vacuum cleaners, unique pottery, coloured bottles, tea-pots, exhaust manifolds, wigs and numerous toys are all fair game for this fine artist to produce sweet paradoxical juxtapositions. His inspiration stems from the epicurean Waikato Plains and the boldness of Mt Pirongia in the Kapamahunga Range decor (near Hamilton, New Zealand), the vast rugged plateaus of the Thompson & Diamantina Rivers (outback Queensland, Australia) and the diverse tranquillities of the Yarra Valley at the foot of the Great Dividing Range (Victoria, Australia). These are just a few of the places that have played an important and influential part of his life. Above all, his unbridled passion as an artist is propelled by his family and friends who have also been regenerated into many creations. He is stimulated and motivated by sociological, environmental and political aspects of the rustic Diamond Creek community. Naughty's works of art are displayed throughout this web site for you to delight in. At 47 years of age - this unconventional artist - has done it all. He has been married three times. He has travelled back and forth to Australia and New Zealand, and between all the travelling he has worked as a welder, an actor, an outback jackaroo, a magician, a clown and a swimming coach. He even calls himself The Naughty See Monkey. Born in Hamilton, New Zealand, Naughty is the eldest of fifteen children. It is not surprising then that his sense of humour is perfectly intact. Naughty recalls with remarkable serenity that he spent most of his childhood living in a farmhouse, surrounded by vast open spaces. He felt it was a great privilege to be in such a large family. "Particularly being the oldest. You were number one. You had immense power. Which as far as I know, I didn’t abuse." Although Naughty’s parents never intended to have fifteen children, "They decided when they got married to have twelve kids. It (just) took a few kids to slow down," Naughty explains. As Naughty grew older he began to explore various artistic avenues, the first was clowning. This is a surprising revelation considering Naughty’s apparently reflective reserve. Working as a professional clown, Timothy Tongue, Naughty said he would stand at a pedestrian crossing in a local street and stop everyone from crossing it. The crowds would soon build up at both ends. Naughty would then pretend to lasso people across the road. He would imitate them if they crossed the road without permission. It drew a huge audience and a lot of laughs. "It was fantastic. It taught you about timing and people’s space. You have to be careful that you don’t get too close to them. We all have this energy field around us and if you get too close, you can get a punch in the face, which has happened to me once before." When Naughty had enough of clowning around, he moved to Australia for a while. He held down various jobs including a more memorable one as a jackaroo in outback Queensland. "This was the job interview. Do you know how to skin, kill and gut a sheep? Yes I do know how to do that." Naughty said he remembered how to, after seeing his Grandad do it when Naughty was five years old. "But I really loved it there, cause you can stand in a paddock and you could see the curve of the earth. It was like you were the only person there in the whole world. There was no one else. I always remember that feeling," he recalls. Naughty was twenty-two when he married the first time. It was a traditional white wedding. It lasted for nine months. His nineteen-year-old wife had never travelled far from her hometown in New Zealand until they came to Australia. It was like a whole new world to her. He remembers, "She just went completely mad…she fell in love with another guy, unbeknown to me. And, three days before going to Singapore, I woke up and she wasn’t there. She left a tiny little note saying she didn’t want to be married anymore and not to try and find her." Soon after the break-up of his first marriage, Naughty told his close friend, Graham, that he would be married again within a year. Graham asked him why. Naughty replied, "I just love getting married. It’s such a great party." So, they made a bet and the prize would be a rare 1930s New Zealand coin. Approximately six weeks before the end of the year, Naughty suddenly remembered the bet, and knew he had to win. He didn’t want to lose, not to Graham anyway. "So I decided to ask a friend to marry me. She went along with it. So, I set up this huge elaborate wedding in the centre of town. It was the first colour photo in the main newspaper, on the front page. I got married in this beautiful purple, velvet suit. It was all pretend." Over fifty people went to the wedding. The marriage lasted until the end of the wedding day. "It wasn’t consummated. But, I would have loved to consummate it. Graham was so impressed that he decided to pay out. I still have them (the coins) somewhere." Although the cost of the wedding far out priced the cost of the coin ($20), Naughty thought it was worth it. Third time lucky, Naughty met the love of his life, Jo. They have been together for sixteen years. They now live with their two children, Henry and Shannon, in Diamond Valley, in a secluded farmhouse on a large block, bordered by native gums. The frantic pace of life beyond the edge of this leafy hideaway, seems distant and shallow. His art studio is only metres away along a muddy path that leads to the farmhouse. The lounge room, which is more like a gallery, displays a collection of abstract paintings, mosaic and metal sculptures. The feature window is adorned by the overflowing paddocks beyond it. Since the age of fourteen, Naughty had an inkling that art would be his greatest pursuit. Many years earlier two school boys visited Naughty in his art studio in New Zealand and said to him, "So you’re an artist are you?" Naughty recalls, "I’d been very cheeky and said yeh I am an Artist. Well, if you’re an artist show us how you paint. So I did and I closed my eyes and made all these marks and this face just exploded off the paper. It was amazing. And they both simultaneously went Wow, you are an artist! I said yes, I am. Well I knew I was before that, but I never actually said it and meant it until that moment." Since then, Naughty has held dozens of solo and group exhibitions, mostly in artist run spaces, all of which have been very successful. Naughty’s creative explorations have led him to dabble in mono printing, mosaic sculptures and figurative painting. Many of the materials used in his art come from old dumps. One of his creations was a sculpture of a four-legged human made out of tin cans. Ideas come easily after practising art for over twenty years he explains, "It’s easy when you’re completely obsessed. I feel I have a certain confidence when I do my work now. I’ve got enough work to last a life time." So the struggling artist was not tormented by his childhood memories, but actually inspired by them. An inspiration reflected in his life, his loves, his surroundings and even his name. When Naughty was looking for a new clown name, it was his friend Graham who created The Naughty See Monkey. He says, "Then it just kind of stuck and I thought, well it’s a short time between birth and death." Naughty didn’t care if people were laughing about his name as long as it made them smile, he was happy. "So I thought oh well, I’ll change it. There are too many miserable people in the world. We need to lighten up."
