A CHRISTMAS GIFT I come to you this Christmas,
Following my solitary silver star,
Carrying my soul,
tied up in tissue paper,
a treasure from afar.I've travelled far this Christmas,
Bringing no frankincense, myrrh or gold
but only my infant soul,
wrapped so carefully for safe keeping,
and long ago put "on hold".I come at Christmas time,
Bringing one tiny pearl of ancient trust,
Hoping that you perhaps will hold my gift,
wrapped carefully for safe keeping,
and know its cost. Why did they come to an infant that Christmas
Giving gold as if visiting a king ?
Yet the wise-men returned
far wiser to their far-off land
and richer for their giving. And now I come to you this Christmas,
Believing that you perhaps will understand,
and help untie the cords
that constrict my trust
in love and hope and living,
and help it grow,
And like those wise men
of so long ago
I am
the richer for the giving.Copyright © Elysha Newland CHRISTMAS 1999
