The Turkish gown worn by Titians model is lovingly reproduced here in black silk, and fully lined in burgundy silk.  The sleeve detail of the unusual shaping of the points can be identified in both the portrait and the remake.  The front detail of pearls and medallions echoes the portrait in its beauty.  The loose style of over gown was seen in other overgarments of the time, without such a strong eastern influence.  A

The Turkish influence in clothing is not unusual for Venice.  Venice was the cross roads of east and west in Europe at the time, and many Turks lived in Venice itself.

This gown was made and is worn by Deborah Lane of Canberra.
