On Track Program Information 2005

Athletic Skills program

The Victorian Little Athletics Association (VLAA) has introduced a new and improved approach to Little Athletics. Geelong Little Athletics has adopted this program, with some modications, deasigned for our Under 7 age group. on Track is a program designed to teach young children the components of athletic events in a fun non-competitive way. Using games, encouragement and lots of different activities we build confidence and enhance skills before introducing the children to the events proper.

Development of skills

Skill development is conducted outside Landy Field on the Barwon Reserve in 45 minute blocks starting at 9.30am, 2 blocks per week for the first 4 weeks. After that we will be conducting a skills practice session (same time same pace), followed by an introduction to an event in Landy Field. You could say our On Track program is an orientation to Little Athletics.

Putting it into practice

When we venture into Landy Field to experience an event for the first time we teach the children how the event is conducted and all the rules associated. We also try to record their performances (pending the amount of time our Track and Field Executive can allow us in thier program to fit in with the other athletes) and give the children a ticket.

During the season we have an end-to-end relay and give each cild a participation ribbon. At the end of the season we have our own Mini Olympics and the children compete in 5 events -long jump, shot put, 70 metres, discus and a 400 metres unlanded event. Ribbons are given for each event, to every participant. On that day we also award certificates to all the children who can complete all components of the taught skills.

Learn with your child

The On Track program is designed so that you can learn with your child. Parents, grandparents, aunties, uncles, siblings etc. are encouraged to get involved with the program and share the experience.
