Peter and I finished our 5 month trip of Western Australia in October 2002. It was a wonderful trip with lots of wildlife and memories. There are parts of WA which are beautiful and 2 of my favorites were the Kimberly, mainly Kalumbaru and The Bungle Bungles and then further south the Maragret River region where I worked my way through the wineries and bought 16 bottles of wine which had to be stored somewhere in the Troopy. One of the amazing memories was when we had the luck ( though terrifying ) of being in the middle of the ocean, whale watching, in Peter's 12 ft boat when 2 pods of humpback whales met and turned towards us and then were all around us. That in itself was scary but worse was when one went under our boat upside down. I had the experience of looking down already scared and seeing a white belly with barnacles on it skimming 2-5 metres under the boat, all 30 odd ft of it.
This photo is of a 24 pound mulloway I caught on 15 pound line at Honeymoon Bay near the Aboriginal mission of Kalumburu. It took 1/2 an hour of fighting to catch this fish which later that night fed Peter, myself, the fishing charter person George, and 6 other people we had just met.
Peter with his beautiful golden trevally. Having over the period of a week that we spent in Honeymoon bay caught so many trevally eventually we began being bored with them. This led to a group of us throwing them back saying its just another trevally. The other fish we caught over the six days included Red Emporer (the nicest eating fish we have had), Barracuda, Spanish Mackerel, Rock Cod, Fingermark Bream and a reef fish called a Stripey.
In the Bungle Bungle ranges is the Cathedral Gorge. A beautiful pool of water at the base of what is obviously a large waterfall in the wet season. From the back of this pool just after midday the intense red cliffs outside along with the startling blue sky are reflected in the waters of the pool. This photo does not do the view the justice it deserves. The bungle bungles also presented us with a weird fact, it is Peters favorite toilet spot. The pit toilet is hidden behind one of the beehive rocks has an amazing view as you walk out of it AND doesnt smell.
After taking the previous photo Peter and I set up this photograph. Peter threw 2 stones into the water, we waited until the right time and then I took a picture of the ripples in the water.
Peter and the Troopy on Cable Beach in Broome, Western Australia. We spent 8 weeks in Broome and this was definately one of the nicest beaches I have been on. Mind you don't forget to dodge the wrinkly old nudists.
