The second Golden Slipper winner by Star Kingdom was described as a one-paced horse. Having been beaten at his first four starts before
winning a minor juvenile event over six furlongs at Randwick he was sent out at 25/1 a week later in the second running of the Slipper. Favourite for the race was Misting who had won the open VRC Lightning Stakes
at weight-for-age. With Mulley in the saddle Skyline won easily beating the Victorian by 1 1/4 lengths and another Star Kingdom foal, the filly, Magic Kingdom, four lengths away in third place. Skyline
then lost form and did not win until the Spring of 1958 when he beat Prince Darius in the Hill Stakes at Rosehill. In the AJC Derby Skyline ran his rivals off their feet (second was Sir Blink who won the Caulfield
Cup a fortnight later) and won in record time. He was to win only one more race the following Autumn over six furlongs before going to stud where he proved only moderately successful. |
