Todman was one of the most brilliant and freakish sprinters to ever race. He made his racetrack debut at Randwick on December 22,
1956. He immediately went to the lead and beat New Stand and Prince Darius by 10 lengths. He again won easily four days later and was then spelled to concentrate on the inaugural Golden Slipper worth 20,000
pounds. On his return he was pitted against older horses in a midweek race at Rosehill over 6 furlongs. He won in race record time. In the Slipper, rider Neville Sellwood sat off the pace before making
his run to win running away by 6 lengths. Todman was considered unbeatable but at his next start in the AJC Sires Produce Stakes over 7 furlongs was beaten by Tulloch. Five days later he extracted
revenge on Tulloch when he beat him in the 6 furlong AJC Champagne Stakes in record time. As a two year old, Todman won five of six starts and set four time records. |

At three, Todman won the AJC Hobartville Stakes at 7 furlongs and then was set for the 9 1/2 furlongs STC Canterbury Guineas.
It showed his courage and brilliance when he won by 8 lengths. At this next start in the Hill Stakes, Todman fractured his off-hind fetlock joint. |

After a break of nearly two years he returned to racing on December 12, 1959 over 6 furlongs at Canterbury carrying 9st
7lbs. Not only did he win but recorded a time of 1:10.9 to set a new record. Still with leg problems he was taken to Melbourne where he won the 5 furlongs VRC Lightning Stakes and the 7 furlongs
VATC Futurity Stakes in race record time. His owner Stanley Wootton decided to retire Todman to stand next to his sire Star Kingdom. He sired over thirty stakes winners including two winners of
the Golden Slipper, Eskimo Prince and Sweet Embrace. |
