For the only time in its history the Golden Slipper was transferred from Saturday to the following Wednesday when incessant rain caused an extremely heavy track.  Favourite fort he race was the South Australian Pago Pago whose trainer felt he would have no trouble handling a rain affected track.  Pago Pago justified this assessment.  From ten Australian starts he record nine wins and was probably unlucky to lose the other.  He was later sold to America for 2000,000 pounds.
