Nightclub owner, Joe Taylor, named the filly he purchased because of a birthday card depicting a galloping horse he had received from his
daughter. The filly was almost identical to the one on the card. Birthday Card was trained by Reg Ferris, first at Rosebery and then at Randwick, but few but her trainer thought she could beat the "hot"
favourite from South Australia, Proud Miss. Birthday Card ran 1:11.4 for the six furlongs to equal Todman's record time. Her jubilant owner walked through the betting ring, handing out money to eager punters
so that by the end of the day he had lost 10,000 pounds. |
