At the Summer Sales of 1975, a yearling colt with a turned out foreleg was passed in for $7,000. Trainer Max Lees
had noticed the colt and made an offer to the owner for $8,000 for client John Balcomb. The "colt from the coalmines" became the first since Baguette to win the Two Year old Triple Crown - the Golden
Slipper, AJC Sires' Produce Stakes and AJC Champagne Stakes. His Slipper win is still ranked by many as the greatest - he set a new record of 1:10.0 and won by seven lengths. He was sold as
a three year old to Swettenham Stud and was trained by Bart Cummings for whom he won five races including VATC Caulfield Guineas, AJC Expressway Stakes and AJC The Galaxy. He raced 17 times for
13 wins, 3 seconds and 1 third. and went on to stand as a sire at Newhaven Park Stud. |
