The 1999 Golden Slipper was marred by the late withdrawal of favourite Redoute's Choice but proved a popular victory for Catbird and trainer
Frank Cleary from Canberra. Catbird was the first horse to win the Black Opal Stakes / Golden Slipper double and his win in the Slipper was a consolation for owner Ken Jones whose brilliant horse, Clan O'Sullivan
was run down by Burst in the 1992 Slipper. Catbird ridden by Mark de Montfort came with a well-timed run to defeat Align by a neck with Shogun Lodge in third place. It also gave sire Danehill his fourth
winner in seven years. Catbird failed to recapture his two year old form and was retired to Yarraman Park Stud in 2000. |
