1997 proved to be a controversial finish to the Slipper when Guineas (the first Slipper winner for John Hawkes) and ridden by Darren Beadman
prevailed by a nose in the time of 1:09.99 over the unlucky Encounter (trained by Clarry Conners) and ridden by Shane Dye. With about 20 metres to go and Encounter ready to overhaul Guineas, the colt suddenly
veered out when hit with the whip thus making the difference between winning and losing. Guineas was sired by Crown Jester who was also the sire of Slipper winner, Rory's Jester. Guineas went on to take
second in the AJC Sires' Produce Stakes behind Encounter. His 9 wins also included the STC Skyline Stakes, Missile Stakes and the AJC Royal Sovereign Stakes. |
