During the week leading up to the 1990 Slipper heavy rain had fallen and it seemed that for the first time since 1963 the race may
have to be postponed. However, on race day the weather cleared and on a heavy track Shane Dye rode his second winner, Canny Lad, for Melbourne trainer, Rick Hore-Lacy, in a field of 6 colts and 10
fillies. As a two year old Canny Lad had 7 starts for 6 wins including VRC Sires Produce Stakes, VRC Maribyrnong Plate and was second in the VATC Blue Diamond Stakes. He retired to Woodlands Stud
in 1991 where he has been a most successful sire. |
