Sydney's two leading trainers (John Hawkes and Gai Waterhouse) were represented by no
fewer than 11 of the 16 runners in this year's Golden Slipper Stakes. John Hawkes had 7 starters (6 of which were owned by the Ingham family). It was hard to conceive that one of the other runners could win
the Slipper but such was the case. Ridden by Danny Beasley, who was second on Victory Vein in 2002, Polar Success had won three from five races leading up to the Slipper, including the Reisling Slipper
Trial. With 100 metres to go, the race looked to be between the Waterhouse-runners, Hasna and How Funny when Polar Sucess charged from the field to win running away in 1:09.07. Owned by a syndicate of 10
owners including the trainer the filly had been a relatively cheap buy at the Magic Millions Sales. |
