When connections paid the late entry fee of $110,000 to ensure a start for the Queensland filly (along with three other late starters) they
hoped that history could be rewritten. Never before had a horse won after paying a late entry fee nor had a Queensland trained horse been victorious in the race. We now know that history was rewritten and in
doing so, Calaway Gal set a new race record of 1:08.81 to better the old one that had stood since 1993. Bred by one of her owners, the filly is trained by Bruce Brown, son of Sid Brown (trainer of Triton and
Darryl's Joy). Victorious jockey Scott Seamer has now won the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups, The BMW and Golden Slipper Stakes in the one season plus other Group 1 races in Australia and New Zealand. Before
the race the filly had won four races in Queensland before being beaten by Victory Vein (second in the Slipper) in two lead up races. Settling in ninth position on the rails, Seamer was able to get her off the
fence at the 600 metres before coming with a withering burst to overcome Victory Vein at the post with Choisir finishing third. |
