Trainer Gai Waterhouse (daughter of Tom Smith who holds the record for training the most Slipper winners) went into the 2001 Golden Slipper
with five runners making up almost one third of the field. Ha Ha, owned by last year's winning owner, John Singleton, was not the most favoured of her runners but proved her worth when she stormed through the
field to win running away. Once again Singleton amid wild scenes in the enclosure announced he would shout free beer in the public bar. For trainer Waterhouse it was her first Slipper winner and she is the
first trainer to train the first three placegetters (second was Excellerator and third, Red Hannigan) in the race. Jockey Jim Cassidy was also a happy man as it was also his first Slipper triumph. |
