On the southern leg (0908-0931) winds were west-north-westerly at
, while on the northern leg (0943-1001) they were
north-north-westerly at
. Turbulence from convection was noted
inland. Some pollutant indicators were found inland, beginning at Botany Bay
and peaking in the vicinity of Bankstown and Parramatta, though these were at
significantly lower levels than the pollutant indicators found offshore.
Similar levels of pollutant indicators were also found in this inland area on
the first circuit. However, the city centre was obscured by particulate smog
when viewed from Dural; the air had been clear on the first circuit. Roughly 3
octas of cumulus were noted inland. There were no temperature differences
between the inland and the ocean at 300 m altitude - it was about
.
On the ocean leg (1012-1028) which was flown at about 100 m,
pollutant indicators were again found, from just north of Manly to Kurnell and
peaking off Bondi, although at lower levels than found on the first circuit.
The ocean-leg run was flown at about 70 m altitude. Onshore flow with speeds of
about
was found from the mouth of the Hawkesbury to Sydney
Heads. The onshore flows seemed to match major variations in the coastal
topography quite closely, with divergence over the mouth of the Hawkesbury.
This northern portion of the ocean leg is shown in
figure 2.
Figure: The northern part of the ocean leg of the second circuit. The aircraft
was flying south along the coast at about 70 m altitude. Times are from
1011 to 1017.
However, offshore flows of
were found in a patch just south of
Sydney Heads and extending south about 6 km to just north of Coogee. South of
this, onshore flow of a similar magnitude was found in a patch of similar
size extending south to Long Bay. South of Long Bay, offshore flow of
was found for the remainder of the run. The southern portion of
the ocean leg is shown in
figure 3.

was flying south along the coast at about 70 m altitude. Times are from
1017 to 1028.
No temperature variations greater than
could be confidently
discerned over the ocean leg. A line of cloud was visible all the way down the
coast. A substantial cumulus cloud bank was visible
well out to sea.
The southern leg was repeated, taking from 1034 to 1049. A landing was made at Camden to refuel.
