The Queanbeyan Whites have lifted the John I Dent Cup for the first time in 24 years after defeating the Gungahlin Eagles 33-12 in their Premier Division First Grade grand final at Viking Park today. The Whites last won the competition in 1983 when they defeated Daramalan (now Gungahlin) 29-12. Queanbeyan, who finished third during the regular season, headed to the break locked at 5-all before unleashing four second half tries to seal the 21-point victory.
KEY GRAND FINAL MATCHUPS
31/8/2007
The Hookers - Daniel Penca (Queanbeyan) vs Matt Hogan (Eagles). The match up with the no.2 jerseys will see the young buck taking on the old buck. Penca in just his first year of senior football has already made his mark on the local competition as well as the representative scene having played for Australia Under 19's earlier this season and is under the watchful eye of the Brumbies Academy staff.
WHITES BLAST INTO DECIDER
28/8/2007
Down 0-28 at the halftime break very few if any people at Vikings Park gave the Queanbeyan Whites any chance of being in the ACTRU Premier Division decider with just 40 minutes play remaining. What transpired in the next 40 minutes left those at the ground completely astounded and thankful that they had made the trek down to the valley and witness what has to be one of the great turnarounds in ACT rugby history.
WHITES DOWN IN THE WET
9/7/2007
The Queanbeyan Whites missed a golden opportunity to cement a top 2 spot on Saturday when they were narrowly defeated by a committed Easts outfit. In terrible conditions the match never reached any great heights with Easts going to half-time with a 10-0 lead whilst the Whites were the only scorers in the second courtesy of a converted try which saw Easts take the result 7-10.
