The Queanbeyan Whites kicked off season 2008 with an emphatic 54-0 drubbing of the highly credentialed Royals side at the Woden sides home base of Phillip District. In front of a very large crowd who had gathered for the Royals gala 'Legends Match' followed by the 'Blue and White Ball' later that night, the legends of yesteryear would have left the ground a little deflated, but more than impressed with a young Whites side that played some scintillating rugby. Even with the presence of former Brumbies, Force and Wallabies half Matt Henjak, Royals had no answer to the Whites second half effort, with the home side no assisted by a horror injury toll throughout the afternoon seeing them lose 4 backline players before the break, and further 4 before the games end. The game started at a frantic pace with both sides not holding back and obviously glad that all the pre-season was over and the real stuff had begun. The game 30 minutes before the first try was scored to the Whites and this was followed by another just before the break with the score 12-0 to the Whites, but with a few cracks starting to appear in the Royals armour. The second half was all Queanbeyan as they swept in for a further 6 unanswered tries to totally dominate the Blues and cap off one of the Whites biggest days at Phillip for a long time having already secured 2nd grade 22-21 on the bell after coming back from 5-21 down, 3rd grade too got home on the bell 15-13 and Colts continued their impressive season thus far with a 55-3 victory whilst the 4th grade points were spilt with a 17-all draw. The only disappointing result was the Women who were beaten by last season's premiers, but were far from disgraced with the effort. The Whites forwards were impressive in the set pieces with the front row of Kennedy, Hegarty and Barbaro scoring a points decision over their much bigger opponents and the backrow gave the Blues backs no peace at all as the day wore on. The Whites backline were electric and scored a number of tries from within their own half with deft passing and use of speed on the flanks. The Whites now prepare for another tough assignment when they host Tuggeranong Vikings at home this weekend. In the other games , both results might be considered slightly surprising with the Vikings beaten by Wests 34-32 and Easts toppling last years minor premiers Eagles 24-17. 1
