Whilst not the finish that locals were hoping for, The Queanbeyan Leagues Club sponsored Whites ran out of steam in the final of the inaugural Campese Sevens and were well beaten by an impressive West Harbour team from Sydney’s Premier Competition.

Twenty teams competed in the L.J. Hooker and Riverside Caravan Park sponsored event at Taylor Park and in what is now set to become a major sporting event for Queanbeyan.

The Whites and West Harbour went through the rounds undefeated with the home side conceding only one try and West Harbour just two in the lead up to the final.

The outstanding player on the day was Whites recent Kiwi arrival Ryan Caine who was tough, rough and very quick around the breakdown areas and should that he will be a bonus to the Whites in season 2008, whilst speedster Robert Beath picked up where he left off last year with some scintillating tries on the flank.

Local heavyweight Gungahlin took out the plate competition in impressive style over Kiama while West’s flyer Ryan Carmichael won the players sprint.

Queanbeyan’s number two team was disappointing after their success at the Kiama Sevens. They only managed one win in the rounds but the team featured some up and coming youngsters who will benefit from the hit-out.

Teams competing included all major Canberra clubs, Fiji Barbarians, who had former Brumby Radike Samo as their leader, St. Patrick Strathfield, Canterbury, Kiama and district teams Harman Sea Dogs and the Bungendore Mudchooks.

Mayor Frank Pangallo and David Campese’s mother Joan presented the trophies to the winners to wrap up what was a very successful day. 1
