São Januário
It was Commander Sarmento de Breires, who just completed an Atlantic crossing
on a plane called Argos, having achieved the first Lisbon - Rio de Janeiro solo flight,
who cut the ceremonial ribbon, thus inaugurating the São Januário stadium. Present
was Brazilian president, Washington Luís and other key figures at the time. Thousands
of people present on the afternoon of the 27th of April 1927, were the people who laid
the foundations to one of the largest stadiums in Latin America, and until the arrival of the
Pacaembu stadium in São Paulo, was the largest stadium in Brazil with its 40000 capacity.
A temple that saw the careers of some of the most famous Brazilian players of all time, risen thanks
to the sweat and the passion of the common man and the people, in a communion that came not only
to end racism in football, but to change the face of the most popular sport in Brazil for years to come.

The history of the construction of the São Januário stadium, is written on the fact
that Vasco da Gama is a club of popular origin, a club that first saw the true
Brazilian style of playing football, the first club that accepted people of various
racial backgrounds, a club that beat prejudice and altered the shape of
things to come. A history that began to unfold 12 years earlier.
