NOISE TAS is an independent, non-profit, non-political body. The organisation aims to operate in the interests of all members of the community, regardless of age, race or religion.

  • Develop a reputation as an informed, supportive and positive community group, voluntarily working towards achieving a more efficient, lawful means of reducing intrusive residential noise, thereby reducing the incidence of neighbourhood reprisals or disharmony.
  • In all matters, act honestly and lawfully, and with the highest integrity. Handle all public inquiries and communications in strict confidence, unless otherwise authorised.
  • Encourage members of the public who are affected by noise problems to, in the first instance, devise an individual plan of noise resolution which may provide the best chance of having their particular problem solved peacefully and harmoniously.
  • Educate the public about the possible dangers which can follow if they (complainants) decide to directly approach noise offenders in an endeavour to resolve noise problems themselves, without first seeking discreet assistance from authorised officers.
  • Provide telephone and email support/information for noise-affected members of the community.
  • If requested, and providing all available lawful means of obtaining noise relief have been exhausted, provide advocacy on behalf of citizens who may need additional support.
  • Encourage government authorities to quickly, efficiently and firmly carry out their lawful responsibilities on behalf of distressed complainants, to prevent escalation and/or deterioration of complainants’ health and quality of life.
  • On request, provide members of the public with copies of research information and resource materials held by NOISE TAS, and details of any known alternative lawful avenues for achieving relief.
  • Seek to further develop membership of NOISE TAS in an endeavour to achieve the collective ability to influence government policy, at all levels, thereby providing more efficient means of intrusive residential noise reduction.
  • Carry out ongoing research and collate up-to-date information about the adverse health effects of intrusive, unwanted community noise.
  • Carry out ongoing research and collate up-to-date information regarding the latest effective methods of urban noise control elsewhere in the world.
  • Inform and educate relevant noise control authorities about results of research undertaken by NOISE TAS on behalf of Tasmanian citizens who demand peaceful residential environments.
  • Reduce the risk of adverse health effects and diminished state of well-being experienced by sufferers of urban noise by achieving changes in present attitudes and behaviour, both on the part of the community and noise control authorities.
  • Influence attitudes of government officers towards implementing comprehensive, continual education of the general public about the unacceptability and unlawfulness of causing intrusive noise in urban environments, and the known possible adverse health consequences which often ensue for those who are exposed to unwanted noise.
  • Maintain existing relationships with, and exchange of information between, world-wide network of noise pollution professionals.
  • By publicly advertising the existence of NOISE TAS, increase awareness in the community that unwanted, intrusive noise is unlawful in residential areas.
  • Work towards ensuring that all public authorities educate and inform citizens, particularly children, about the serious dangers to hearing from exposure to amplified and high decibel sounds.
  • Encourage designated noise authorities to regularly check decibel levels in all public venues.
  • Strive towards expansion of NOISE TAS into all Australian States.
Remember, noise can be a danger to your health.
