HOLTHUSS

CARSTEN ALBERT

Carsten Albert was born in 1738.  Carsten was the second son of Johann Holthuss, sugar refiner, and his wife Christina Dorothea Ehlers in the village of Nordholz, parish of Bucken, situated near Breman and Hannover.

Carsten Albert moved to England in 1760.  At this time there was extensive migration of Hanovarians to England and most settled in the East End of London to engage in sugar refining, a craft in which the west German states at that time led the world.  Most of the refineries were situated near Goodman's Fields, the main reason being the proximity to docks and warehouses.

There were a few Holthouse's in London at the time, but at present we know very little about them.

However, it is known that Carsten's brothers Johann and Christian emigrated to London.

This is the time when Carsten changed his name to Holthouse.

HOLTHOUSE

Carsten Albert was befriended by Joachim Friedrich DOLGE, sugar refiner.  In 1778 he married Joachim Friedrich's daughter  Mary DOLGE.  Carsten and Mary had three sons, two died in infancy and two daughters - one survived.
