| General Murtala Ramat Mohammed (1938-1976) | |||
| General Murtala Ramat Mohammed was born on
the 8th of November 1938 in the Kurawa Quarters
of Kano City. He enrolled into the Nigerian
Army after high school, and trained in England
at Sandhurst Royal Academy, the Catterick
School of Signals, and the Joint Services'
Staff College. During his military careers,
he served in the Nigerian contingent to the
United Nations' Peace Keeping Force to Congo,
and on his return, he served in the Signals
Corp of the Nigerian Army. During the Nigerian
civil war, he was the first General Officer
Commanding, Second Infantry Division. After
the civil war, General Mohammed returned
as head of the Signals Corp, but later served
as a Commissioner in the military government.
On 29th July, 1975, following a military
coup carried out by younger soldiers that
disposed Lieutenant-Colonel Yakubu Gowon,
he was named Head of State and Commander
in Chief of the Armed Forces. However his
reign as Nigeria President was short lived
as he was assassinated on 13th of February
1976 in an abortive coup attempt when his
car was ambushed in traffic in Lagos. He
was succeeded by his chief of staff, Olusegun
Obasanjo, who completed the plan of an orderly
transfer to civilian rule by handing power
to Alhaji Shehu Shagari on the 1st of October
1979. General Murtala Mohammed was the 4th President of Nigeria and is considered a national hero in Nigeria. It appears that the serial numbers on those printed in Nigeria are a bit inferior to those printed by G&D. In some cases, you may find the last digit on the vertical row of serial number either partly missing or incomplete and the third digit on the horizontal row printed either with some form of mechanical fault or with extra inks on it. It would be interesting to know at what percentage of these prints is like that! |
