Sir Apirana Turupa Ngata, a prominent New Zealand politician and lawyer, was born on 03/07/1874 to a Maori family in Te Araroa, a small coastal town about 175 kilometres north of Gisborne, New Zealand. He has often been described as the foremost Maori politician to have ever served in Parliament, including holding the portfolios for Maori Land Councils, Native Affairs and occasionally served as acting Deputy Prime Minister. In 1927, Ngata was awarded a knighthood, only the third Maori to receive this honour. Ngata died in Waiomatatini on 14/07/1950. He is remembered for his great contributions to Maori culture and language.
