Katherine Wilson Sheppard was born on 10/03/1847 in Liverpool, England, to Scottish parents. Officially, her name was Catherine Wilson Malcolm, but she preferred to spell her given name "Katherine", or abbreviate it to "Kate". She was the most prominent member of New Zealand's women's suffrage movement, and is the country's most famous suffragette. Because New Zealand was the first country to introduce universal suffrage, Sheppard's work had a considerable impact on women's suffrage movements in other countries. In 1869, several years after the death of her father, Sheppard was brought by her mother to Christchurch. In 1872, she married Walter Allen Sheppard, and adopted his surname. Her husband died in 1915 while in England. In 1925, Sheppard married William Sidney Lovell-Smith. He died only four years later and Sheppard herself died in Christchurch on 13/07/1934. Sheppard is considered to be an important figure in New Zealand's history. Apart from the above Ten dollar bill, a memorial to Sheppard also exists in Christchurch. | |||
