| Sir Edmund Percival Hillary | ||
| Sir Edmund Percival Hillary, KG, ONZ, KBE,
a New Zealand mountaineer and explorer,
was
born on 20/07/1919 in Tuakau, south
of Auckland.
He and Sherpa mountaineer Tenzing Norgay
(Nepali national) were the first climbers
to reach the 8,848 m (29,028 ft) summit
of
Mount Everest on 29/05/1953. Sir Edmund
Hillary
was created a Knight Commander of the
Order
of the British Empire (KBE) on 16/07/1953;
a Knight of the Order of the Garter
(KG)
on 23/04/1995; and a member of the
Order
of New Zealand (ONZ) in 1987. He is
the only
living New Zealander to appear on a
banknote. Sir Edmund Hillary passed away on the 11/01/2008, aged 88 |
