INTRODUCTION

The structure of Australian Football has altered dramatically in the past twenty years. Prior to the expansion of the Victorian Football League all the state leagues were equal members of the National Australian Football Council. In 1994 the NAFC was dissolved and the replaced by the Australian Football League (previously VFL) as the games controlling body, which reduced all the other competitions to second tier status.

Bernard Whimpress & Ross Smith have lamented the lack of willingness among football historians to establish a ‘first class’ classification system for the game. Such a system would enable researchers and statisticians to compile a much more accurate list of records. Sadly establishing a classification system is much more difficult than it sounds, for example the Goldfields (1905-1919) and Broken Hill leagues were full members of ANFC and could argue that their league should be considered ‘first class’. Unfortunately establishing a list of first class matches is beyond the scope and resources of this document. This document does attempt to present ‘first class’ records before they are forgotten forever.

What is a senior game?

Although determining what is and isn’t ‘first class’ is not the intention of this document it is impossible not to explore the topic. The greatest step in compiling football records is determining what constitutes a senior game.

During the 1980s Bernard Whimpress developed a paradigm for the Football Times Yearbook. Whimpress suggested that the VFL, VFA, SANFL, WAFL, TFL, NTFA, NWFU, ACTAFL, NSWAFL & QAFL should be considered equally. Whimpress added that state, intrastate, night and pre-season cup games should also be considered.

Interestingly Whimpress excluded the Northern Terriroty FL from the list of senior competitions. Since the demise of the Football Times Yearbook the NTFL has surpassed many of the other state leagues, an example being the NTFL’s victory over the VFA in 1994. Therefore it is reasonable to add the NTFL to the list of senior competitions.

Should the game be divided into eras?

Historian Max Sayer argued that football should history be split into three distinct categories;

·        Victorian League 1897-1986,

·        The National era – VFL/AFL from 1986,

·        Other state leagues until 1986.

Sayer’s argument for using 1987 as the start of the national era is not persuasive. For example in 1987 the SANFL and TFL still operated without any involvement in the national competition. Therefore it is impossible to determine the exact year the national era began. It could be argued that the national era began in 1987 when Brisbane and West Coast joined the VFL, 1990 when the VFL became the AFL or in 1994 when the NAFC was usurped by the AFL. Due to difficulty in determining an exact beginning of the national era the following document will be making the assumption that the AFL and all the state leagues are ‘first class’.

Football Records

For the compilation of football records the following competitions have been considered as being of ‘first class’ standard;

·        Victorian League/AFL (1897-),

·        Victorian Association (1877-1995),

·        Victorian Football League (1996-),

·        South Australian Assoaciation/League (1877-),

·        Western Australian Association/League (1885-),

·        Tasmanian League (1879-2000, 2009-),

·        North Tasmanian Football Aassociation (1886-1986),

·        North West Football Union (1910-1986),

·        ACT league (1924-),

·        Queensland League (1905-),

·        New South Wales League (1903-) &

·        Northern Territory League (1917-).

In addition interstate, intrastate, intra-association, international rules, night series, preseason cup, State/Australian championship, pre-war tour games and Australia Day/Aboriginal All-Stars have been taken into consideration.

As it stands the Australian Football League only recognises the records set in the VFL/AFL competition. This document goes someway to rectifying this problem.

Gold Coast History:

The Gold Coast has been represented in the Queensland league by Southport (formed 1961) and Broadbeach (formed 1970). Southport joined the league in 1983 after winning eight Gold Coast premierships and Broadbeach joined in 1997. The Sharks went on to win thirteen Queensland premierships and Broadbeach have been regularly qualified for the finals.

In 1987 the VFL expanded to the Gold Coast with the formation of the Brisbane Bears. The Bears played at Cararra with little success until relocating in 1993.

The Gold Coast Football club was formed in 2008 to initially compete in the under 18 competition. On 31 March 2008 the AFL announced that the Gold Coast team will join the AFL senior competition in 2011.
