Who are the Hackham Creek Minders ? |
| The Hackham Creek Minders work closely with Hackham South Primary School in the rehabilitation of a section of Hackham Creek. The site which is located within the school grounds has undergone a significant transformation with the removal of large exotic trees such as willows and swamp oak from the site. The Creek itself is a small tributary of Hackham Creek and suffers from the effects of high rates of stormwater bringing litter and other organic pollutants onto the site. Weeds are a significant issue with Ash, Fennel and other species found on-site. The group is important in on-going management and maintenance, removal of these weeds, and is also involved with the establishment of local native species with the school including local sedges. Funds supplied by the Natural Resource Management Board (NRMB) have enabled the removal of large exotic trees, on-going control of introduced grasses and the supply of more than 1500 indigenous plants. The benefits of the project and the on-going commitment of the volunteers will see improved water quality, increased biodiversity value for local species. This project also has important educational outcomes for local students and the wider school community and provides a more attractive and appreciated local environment. |

WHAT IS A “PATCH”? |
A Hackham Creek Minders Our Patch is a section of a catchment where activities undertaken by a team of volunteers help to improve the health of that catchment. An Our Patch Group may cover an area of just a few metres, a few kilometres or anything in between. It may include a stormwater drain, an important piece of remnant native vegetation or wildlife habitat, a degraded area full of weeds or any other natural or man-made watercourse feature. Above all, an Our Patch is where best practices are implemented for the benefits of improved water quality, community education, improved amenity and enhanced biodiversity. WHO CAN GET INVOLVED? |
