2004 Pelicans of the Year Texas Pete (Reserve Grade) : "Pete have you got the shirts?" came the question. "Yes, I'll be back in 15 minutes" came the reply. A severe dose of Pelicanitis from the Texan. Paul Galanos (Reserve Grade) : Our Gal gets things around the wrong way sometimes - instead of calling for a change of boots, he rips them off and has to go off while a new pair are found; Ravens concede a goal in his absence. Willie Newton (First Grade) : Willie managed to trip over whilst walking his dog and re tore his already torn calf. Also for walking round with what looks like a gas mask on his calf. Nominations for 2005 (27/02/2005) Simon Payet (Reserve Grade): During the warm up in 2nd grades first trial game, Simon somehow managed to trip himself over and fall flat on his face, much to the amusement of his much more fleet of foot team mates. Jurgen Klinsmann, who was commentating on the game for Kaiser Sports, thought the fall should have received more sympathy from the referee. A definite candidate for Pelican of the year. (15/03/05) Robbie Volpato (1st Grade): This Tuesday night training session will be remembered for only one thing, and that was Robbie tripping over the ball as he went to dribble with it. As he went to take off with it, he managed to trip on the ball and land flat on his back, and in doing so, he gifted the non yellow side their opening goal of the evening, which proved crucial in their one goal victory. (26/03/05) George Vallas: George thought it would be a good idea to take his father and his father in law to be, who have only met once before, to the recent Australia vs Iraq soccer game. When they get to Aussie Stadium, George is surprised to find a lot of Waratah supporters standing around outside the ground. George thinks nothing of it and presumes there must be a rugby game on at the SCG. When his ticket doesn't work, the penny drops and he realises that the Australia vs Iraq game must be at Telstra Stadium. A short taxi ride later, and the three of them arrive at Homebush in time for the 2nd half. A very clever way to assure your father in law to be, that his daughter is in safe and capable hands. A very strong candidate for Pelican of the Year. (31/03/05) Nick Zorbas (1st Grade): After a tough training session, all Zorbie could think of was getting in his car and going home. There was just one small problem, the car he was trying to get into wasn't his. The car Nick was trying to unlock, was in fact Ross Kethel's, which although the same colour, is not even the same model as Nick's. After discovering the key didn't fit properly, it slowly dawned on Nick that this was maybe not his car. Unfortunately half the team realised this before he did. To make matters worse, he then started to walk off in the opposite direction to where his car was parked. What a pelican!! (25/06/05) It was Saturday morning, and Ross was starting to get a little hungry, so when his morning tea break arrived, he left work and set off for McDonalds. He opted for the drive through service, and placed what was no doubt a substantial order. However instead of driving around to the next window to collect his meal, he drove straight past the window and kept driving. Several minutes later it dawned on him that he had forgotten to collect his meal. A quick U-Turn and he was on his way back to Maccas. Back through the drive through service he went, this time remembering to stop at the collection window. Although it was now a little cold, the friendly staff at McDonalds had kindly kept his meal for him. For me this deserves a pelican award for two reasons. The first is obviously for what I have just told you, and the second is for Ross actually telling someone about it. I don't think this can be beaten for pelican of the year!!
