Gay Parent Network is a new Brisbane based community group for GLBT parents throughout Queensland and northern New South Wales. It's designed to provide gay parents with peer support, friendship, and a sense of belonging.
"I'm bi and I have custody of my children. I'm isolated from the str8 community because I identify myself as 'queer', and I'm isolated from the gay community because I've got 'breeder baggage'. They say I can't really be gay if I've got kids. I haven't been in a sexual relationship for ten years and I have no gay friends. I just can't find the middle ground."
It's free, informal, and confidential. There's no need to feel alone. You're not. Other people have been where you are now. Please feel free to share your experiences and fears, and please ask for help if you need it. Through sharing we become stronger as individuals, and also as a group.
"I only realised I was a lesbian after I got married and had kids. I tried to tell my husband but he went completely nuts. He took the kids to Mount Isa, and by the time I tracked them down, they'd all turned against me - my oldest son called me a 'miserable f**king dyke'. I haven't seen my kids now in four years and I haven't had the emotional strength to find a partner. I've lost my children and my sexuality; the two things that made me who I am."
