Tomás Dietz, Flamenco Artist
Australian born, Tomás Dietz grew up in Goulburn, NSW. Despite his diverse heritage of Scottish, Papua New Guinean, German and Spanish blood, Tomás nevertheless identifies himself first as flamenco - it is the spirit of this art form that defines him today.
Tomás first studied flamenco guitar as a teenager and only later discovered its dance form at age 23. Since then he has devoted his career to the dance form.
On stage his artful line and emotional depth combine to deliver the full force of flamenco; a force which he ignites with arcing zapateado. Now with some 20 years experience in the flamenco industry, Tomás is also known for his precise, insightful teaching. Tomás freely shares his experience with his students who are led straight to the core of flamenco and who learn, above all, to celebrate the emotional drive behind skilled movement.
Since studying flamenco intensively in Spain, Tomás has performed in the companies of Antonio Vargas, Diana Reyes and Deanna Blacher, and was co-director of the Sydney flamenco dance company, Metro Flamenco.
Tomás is the director of the Flamenco Centre in Canberra, and is concurrently the guest tutor at: the Los Carmonas Academy in Stanmore NSW; the Pasión Flamenco Dance Academy in Rockdale NSW; and the Spanish Dance Institute, Perth, where his choreographies are the benchmark for the Institute's Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum performance medals. Tomás is also the flamenco consultant in Flamenco Dreaming for Descendance Aboriginal Theatre and has choreographed extensively for Danza Viva's productions at the Octagon Theatre, WA.
Tomás performs regularly at the Spanish Tapas restaurant in Sydney, and is currently appearing in Opera Australia's production of Bizet's Carmen at the Sydney Opera House until March.
