- About the Event:This year's event will be a 'Metrogaine'. Metrogaines differ from the regular fomat in that they are based in the suburbs and take advantage of the streetscape, parks and reserves.
Each year we have between 50 and 100 scouts, cubs, venturers, leaders and parents from all over Sydney participating. The program works better with more people, more teams and more competition.
- So what is rogaining:Rogaining is the Australian team sport of Cross Country Navigation. It is a challenging sport which calls upon many personal skills such as teamwork, concentration, map and compass reading and physical stamina. These skills
are ones which Scouting encourages. The object of the sport is to
walk/run to as many of the special numbered locations marked on the map as
possible in a set time. These special numbered locations are called '
controls' and are marked with a flag. Each member of each team is issued
with a map and a description sheet. The description sheet lists the
control numbers, a very brief description of the location of the control and the number of points awarded for visiting the control. One of the skills in rogaining is the choosing of the route to be taken (unlike most orienteering events where everybody goes the same way). To score well, you must visit as many of the controls as you can and be back at the Hash House (the Start/Finish Line) before the finish time. It does not pay to come back late. Latecomers are penalised 10 points per minute so you can easily finish with a negative score. A good mix of speed and accuracy is what is required to score well. All teams start at the same time but they must navigate separately, however, no team will be penalised for assisting another team which really needs help
- The Course:A metrogaine differs from the traditional format in that many of the controls are 'car rally' style questions, not flags. The course is located around the Como Bridge extending to Jannali, Oyster Bay, Oatley etc.
The map of the actual course will only be available on the morning of the
event. No-one except the organisers will know the details of the course
until the maps are issued on the day.
- Teams: Dads and Mums join in too Each team will comprise at least one
adult (leader or parent) and up to four scouts (minimum 1 adult, 1 scout).
Leaders and parents are asked to take a 'back seat' and let the scouts do most of the navigation. This rule does not apply to Venturer teams.
