WEEK 7: 29/04/2003
This week saw our Fastbreak Breakers have a well-earned rest, well a Bye actually – and not really a rest. No, not to be idol, nor waist their time relaxing in front of the telly for the first time in 6 weeks on a Tuesday night, our brave little heroes fronted up for a friendly in-house, intra-club competition!
But it was almost like an away game!! Yes, that’s right, after an initial ummm, ‘mix-up’ with co-inhibitors “Mitcham” 1st & 2nd Division Teams, it was…ummm, decided that Fastbreak would forego their own tables (up the front) and play down the back of the room. It proved to be somewhat of a novelty, especially on the far end table (in front of the way to loud jukebox) which had more rolls than a Baker’s
Delight shop!! Not to mention the wall precariously placed about 2 foot from the left hand side of
that table either!! But on the other hand, the atmosphere proved more intimate and
holidayie than the front tables could ever have been.

All the players from the Fastbreak Team put their names into a hat, and a draw was produced. In order to even things out a little, a handicap was also introduced which allowed some players to remove however many balls their handicap was from the table, after
colours were decided ….make sense?? Hahahah
Anyways, each game was best of 3, however the game ended when 1 player won 2 in a row. Even so, most games went to 3 and it was a later night than normal, testimony to the seriousness the players approached the night.
Indeed, there was some top grade pool played! It certainly drew the attention of passers by, but it was not all hard yakka. The banter between players and umpires / passers-bye and onlookers certainly proved as entertaining as the 8-ball!
To cut a very long story short, 16 players started, and through ‘almost’ sudden death play offs, the eventual finalist battled through 4 different rounds / opponents.
Drum roll….and the winner is = Jason
Lowe! Well done J-low who took home $50.00 as first prize!! (kindly donated by our sponsors)
Runner-up – Steve Jeffrey, won a DVD of the memorable “The Hustler” (kindly donated by
Nighthawk Enterprises).
Thanks also go to Steve Massey (owner of the Fastbreak Pool Room) for supplying pizzas for the night!!
So with newfound confidence and relaxed demeanour, it’s off to Daisies Hotel next week to do battle with the Mitcham. Will Fastbreak have another victory? Will their shirts still invoke awe? And can the Mitcham manage to put forward a side not littered with 1st division players?? Hmmmm, I retire now to my abode to ponder these quandaries…until next week –
GO FASTBREAK!
