WEEK 1: 18/03/03
Well, the much anticipated first
round of the season found the Fastbreak players somewhat
subdued. Possibly still recovering from the long break, or
maybe it was the stifling heat experienced at practise that
had sapped their drive, but it was a disappointing loss to
Ringwood RSL that began the season.
The venue was the Ringwood RSL, and a very pleasant venue
indeed. For the majority of Fastbreak players, this was virgin
territory as the RSL is a new venue for the 3rd division 2003
competition.

The RSL tables proved a lot quicker and livelier than
those at Fastbreak, which caught many players off guard. However, as
all agreed, the RSL tables were excellent. Indeed, it seemed to be the
little things that usually work (doubles / reverse cuts etc. etc) that
just didn’t seem to work for our Fastbreak players on the night.
Don’t get me wrong, the playing and shot selection was very good,
but missing the black ball (often more than once) caused more than one
loss. Credit should also be given to the RSL players who played a very
good tactical game.
The highlight of the evening came when “star ruckman” Justin
Rosmalen approached the table in his third game for the break.
Brandishing his home made breaking cue (solid steel butt!) which can
only be described as a ‘weapon of mass destruction’, he let forth
a mighty SMACK! Suffice it to say, several balls took flight clean off
the table, and the opposition was left asking “What the
#@$%”!!
Fastbreak also saw some new and old (returned) faces to the team.
Tammy Bryson and Mark (Benny) Benesovsky are first time players,
although Tammy has been part of the Fastbreak family for years (we
finally got her to play!!) and Roxanne Talbot has returned from the
realms of obscurity to play once more.
Regular faces included Craig Zammit (c); Craig Chenco (vc); Jason
Lowe; Justin Rosmalen; Daniel Eaton; Marco Peccenini; Joe Saldaneri;
Steve Jefferies; Peter Greenslade; Danny Searle; Tracy Ladlow and
Carly Clarke. Unfortunately regular player Becky Fisher couldn’t be
with the team due to illness - get well soon Beck!
Whilst this loss is not a huge concern, it may be just what the
Breakers need to blow out the cobwebs and focus back on the task at
hand. Next week we see our gallant breakers take on The Blackburn
Magic at home.
