Railway

Crystal Brook is at the junction of the east-west Sydney-Perth railway line and the north-south Alice Springs-Adelaide line.

This photo is probably of work on construction of the original railway embankment using horse drawn scoops. It appears that earth from each side of the proposed line is being scraped onto the growing embankment, which is on the left side of this photo.

Graham Seidel informs me that according to a reference he has, "Laurence Stanley: On a whim and a Prayer", this was on the Redhill to port Pirie line through Nurom.

Construction of railway embankment

Loading stone for railway line construction Loading stone into wagons, probably for use in construction of the railway line.

The stone would have been sorted to size, probably the larger pieces broken with hammers, and then dumped on top of the embankment as ballast. The eucalypt sleepers would have been laid on the ballast and the rails attached to the sleepers using 'dog spikes'.

The old bridge is still standing, but trains now cross on a new and higher one.

Crystal Brook Bridge Mark II The second railway bridge over Crystal Brook didn't last long; it was washed out by a flood. This photo is dated 24th Oct. 1975. It seems that the foundations must have been undermined by the Brook in flood.

The source of this photo is unknown.

The same derailment as in the above photo; some of the local people going to have a look. Derailment

Ghan crash March 1987

Ghan crash 1 The Ghan derailment of March 1987. The Ghan hit a semitrailer at the level crossing in Crystal Brook and was derailed.

Ghan crash 2 I believe the only injury was the driver of the semitrailer.

Ghan crash 3 The rescue helecopter leaves for an Adelaide hospital.

Part of one wall of the Crystal Brook chaff mill is in the background.
