Crystal Brook Township
Crystal Brook in 1879
This is the earliest photo of Crystal Brook that I know of; it was
taken in 1879. It is hard to pick any of the buildings that are
still in Crystal Brook in 2003, but I think the large building
right of centre must be one of the hotels.
A striking point is the complete lack of trees in the town.
A photo of modern
Crystal Brook would show a town that is partly hidden by all its
trees. The red gum trees of the present motor bike track area can
be seen in the distance on the right.
The main street of Crystal Brook. The Crystal Brook Hotel is on the
left.
To judge by the cars, the photo might date from about 1920.
Note the telephone poles and lines;
these started to disappear around 1980 as
the lines went underground.
This must be looking SW along Bowman Street. The date is not
recorded, I would guess about 1910 by the lack of motor vehicles.

Time off for a photo. Grain-yard workers take a break from loading
wheat onto railway wagons.
A grader built by Hurst's in Crystal Brook. It was designed to be
drawn by horses.
The grain-yards are in the background, with a weigh-bridge by the
little sheds.
Silo collapse
The Wheat Board silo collapsed in about December 2002.
Apparently the bottom split when there was about 600 tonnes
of grain in the silo. The grain fell out so suddenly that
a partial vacuum was produced and this caused the top part
of the silo to collapse inward.
