Bothwell township - northern end Photographer: M. Glover
The town was planned in 1823 and by 1830 had a church, hotel, soldiers'
barracks and some substantial houses. Many of the people sent to Bothwell as
convicts chose to remain in the district. The town has remained as a service centre
for the surounding farms and for the fishermen and hunters who take advantage of our
forested areas and trout streams.

The Historical Society was founded in 1975 to foster an interest in the history of the area and to promote the preservation of historic buildings. Many local histories of the Bothwell area have been published in the past 60 years. The society acts as guardian of the Bothwell Literary Society Library which was established in 1834 and remains as the oldest extant country library collection in Australia. We also answer queries on the history of Bothwell and Bothwell family history.
The Society has published a booklet on
the Apsley Memorial Cross
