SCOUT TROOP NEWSWeekend hike, 16Km Heathcote to Helensburgh26-27 May 2007 The Scout Troop planned a two day hike with a light weight camp for the Red and Blue level journey. The plan was to meet at Sutherland station, catch train to Heathcote, walk 9Km along the Heathcote Creek to Camp Coutts at Waterfall for an overnight camp, then walk another 7Km to Helensburgh and catch train back to Sutherland. Three Scouts made the Saturday morning start with Egil and Feathers. After a map reading and navigation exercise in the Heathcote Scout camp, we enjoyed the perfect Autumn weather following the fire trail beside the water supply pipeline, heading south along the Heathcote Creek valley. After a lunch stop beside the Battery Causeway, we turned off the fire trail and followed a narrow rough trail to Waterfall. We arrived in Camp Coutts by 4pm where the four more Scouts and Bilby were waiting for us.
We enjoyed cooking a baked dinner on the camp fire on a very cold night. After a cold start on Sunday morning, seven Scouts headed off south towards Helensburgh with Bilby and Feathers and left Chris and Egil to pack up camp and take the heavier gear back to the hall. The 7km covered today was easy going on wide fire trails.
Thanks to Feathers for organising the hike.
