What Is Astrology?

Astrology is the study of symbols (planets) revealing human behaviour cycles. It reveals limiting behaviours which misguide, confuse and disappoint us, and also liberating behaviours which bring us the most success in life.

What Is A Horoscope?

A horoscope is simply a personality profile which reveals how an individual behaves. It is also a map of that individuals direction through life.

Astrology - Superstition or Science?

Astrology has always been based in science. In medieval times, physicians, mathematicians and scientists could not become qualified unless they were able to calculate the positions of the planets and create a horoscope. Today, there seems to be some lingering superstition associated with astrology because during the Reformation the science of studying the stars was viewed as heresy, and thus much information was lost. What more modern astrologers could not gain from past books they borrowed from the Eastern astrologers, and much of this is based in limiting karma and Caste systems that do not provide a focus on personal growth.

Since the birth of psychology, much has been learned about human behaviour, and modern astrology has borrowed substantial insights from behavioural psychology. Carl Jung, one of the greatest pioneers in understanding human behaviour, actually used astrology for many years to help understand the psychoses of certain psychiatric patients. With astrology he could predict when patients were about to have a psychotic episode. So how could a scientist accept astrology?

Astrology can be believed, for want of a better word, in three ways. Firstly, by a leap of faith: believing there is a Great Spirit who created the Universe in an ordered and predestined fashion, where the planets of our solar system have a direct energy effecting humans on earth.

Secondly, by using archetypes (models) and symbols. This method has more of a psychologist’s approach. We can use the planets as symbols for human behaviour. Each human being has basically similar behavioural patterns, though they are uniquely expressed. These behaviours can be related to stories and legends of characters passed down through history. For example, the planet (symbol) Mars speaks of the warlike character Ares from Greek mythology. We can apply his behaviour to our own, for we all have a warlike and assertive/aggressive nature. The art of the astrologer reveals how it is expressed uniquely. Lastly, believing astrology can be done as a combination of both methods just explained, as science is now discussing how the Sun’s cosmic rays actually do seem to reach out to Pluto and beyond, and then return bringing their particular magnetism and energy to the Sun and thus the inner planets. After all, all things are connected.
