Coach's Training Summary

12/05/2008

A very disappointing attendance with only Erin K, Emma W and Alexis R showing up.

Running a quick torture to the court thirds was used as a warm-up.

This session's focus is on player movement, fast passing and catching, tracking players defensively and avoiding stepping with ball.

GA & GS versus GD & GK (coach) plays were run for about 15 minutes. Attack was instructed to keep ducking and weaving to shake off the defence. The defence was instructed to either watch their opponent's eyes and play in front of them ready to intercept passes, or play behind watching the opponent with peripheral vision while always maintaining position between them and the goal post. This drill worked well with GA & GS creating the close shooting opportunities and GD & GK intercepting and rebounding as well.

A small triangle of cones was set-up and players were asked to pass to the next player on a cone and follow the pass to that cone. The pace was fast with only 4 participants and the exercise helped with sprinting and catching as well as passing quickly to position. This was done clockwise and counter-clockwise.

Shooting practice followed where shots were taken well above the head with emphasis on the follow through. Players had to shoot over a tall defence (the coach) and sprint past to get the rebound. Three locations (2 x baseline, 1 x front-on) were used.

Because of the poor attendance training was finished 10 minutes early.
