This was the first training session of the season and a very warm day for it too! Drinks breaks needed to be frequent.
All six players attended and were asked to do a very easy torture over the court thirds.
Another team joined because their coach was absent.
Focus of this session was mainly on passing skills. A two ball exercise with two players bounce passing and passing over simultaneously was used to get hand-eye coordination working and broaden peripheral vision. Players swapped between bouncing and trow over passes.
To get the players watching the ball, a rotational court wide passing drill around the corners of a court third was run. Once players got a feel for it, a second ball was introduced to make it slightly more difficult. After a while the direction was reversed.
Since the heat was having a significant effect on the players, shooting practice was run by a simple one-on-one changeover GS + GK with pass-in from the side.
With enough players available to set up a 6 aside game, the teams were split and divided into attack and defence players so that only half-court would be used because of the heat. Teams switched over after 4 minutes.
The session was closed a few minutes early as this was a reasonably solid workout under the sun.
There will always be work on passing and catching at training to help improve possession time in the games and minimise turnovers.
